Why would 21 closely bonded people on a small island turn against each other? When a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company sends employees to an uninhabited island near India to work on a biological research project, life is like a paradise, at first. Then the team discovers that they've been cut off from the outside world, and they begin to suspect that they've become bio-chemical human test subjects. Uncertain whom to trust, they suspect someone on the island is behind it all, or perhaps their pharmaceutical company, the military, or even the government. They finally turn on one another, and some change forever.

Jackel IslandActually I wouldn't actually call this book a thriller. The first 50% of the book was like watching grass grow. I understand why. But the characters were developed, explained, analyzed and described over and over and over. I have never gotten to know such a large cast of characters so well.
Although there was reason. Still, the protagonist was like the weird kid in middle school. She was immature and just strange.
I almost gave up on this book. But I was compelled to find out what was really going on and what was going to happen. It wasn't until the near end of the book that anything of significance happened. And then the story took off.
I think the book had much more significance to others than it had to me. But, on the whole this was a fascinating book about what could happen to a group of people when confronted with isolation, adverse, unknown and frightening circumstances. And I do appreciate how the author took the time to let us know the final outcome of such a large cast of characters. I would definitely read more of her work.

Jackel Island Amy L Benevento 9780985620707 Books Reviews
As the story unfolded, and I got to know each character better, I found myself more and more anxious to know what lay ahead for them ---- why were they really there? The author cleverly discloses this through the interaction of
the main character, likable but curious, with each of the others ----- all with totally different personalities. Yet all shared something common in their pasts. It was interesting to see the changes that transpired in them, both emotionally and physically, as the circumstances changed on the island. And finding out what became of them
later in life was the book's perfect finish.
Looking forward to the author's next book!
I was shocked when I saw the plethora of positive reviews for this novel. Overall, I was just very underwhelmed. With everything. The so-called incredibly astounding plot twist at the end is not all that great. Sure theres a little creativity, but it basically confirmed what the reader already thought to be true. One of the things that bothers me most is that theres no real plot. The book just meanders along. And for being the main character, Jamie is a surprisingly weak character. I did not like her. She's not very smart, not very interesting, takes actions that don't make sense, and her only redeeming quality is that she's nice. Awesome. Half the time I was reading, I was thinking, "Jamie! Why didn't you do this! What are you doing?" I found the style of writing to be quite rudimentary at times, and there were oddities in things like word choice and syntax that I would think would have been cut out. I waited and waited for the book to live up to its billing as a "psychological thriller", and ended up waiting the whole book because in my opinion, it was not very thrilling at all, save for a couple of scenes. If so many people seemed to enjoy it, there's probably a big piece of this story that I'm missing. Anyway, I'm glad to finally be done with this book so I could move on to something else.
I only intended to glance through Jackel Island but was quickly hooked and had to read the whole book. I had book club titles next in queue, but too bad. That's how compelling this book was, to make me spend many sleep-deprived nights because I HAD to keep reading. I was intrigued with the isolated situation, reminiscent of Lost, the TV series, but this plot hangs together and gives satisfaction at the end. You won't be yelling "WTF?!" and writhing on the floor as I wanted to do at the grand finale of Lost. JI has many characters, all fully sketched out and indeed drawn for your assistance. I appreciated this as well as the map and photos. The themes explored how people interact with each other (or don't), what is the nature of society, what is good and evil, and what principles will be thrown out the window when those people get down to survival, or what they perceive to be a survival emergency. Having just traveled, I noticed how we passengers--after a day of being jerked around by the airlines--how we civilized people nearly came to murderous intentions to get on the plane they were trying to bribe three of us to give up. That little inconvenience and we were near losing it! So imagine really being trapped on an island, cut off from everything, rationing food, and what will happen to these supposedly nice people?! It's a good read. I found a few typos and some "I-me" mistakes, something that makes me crazy, so I wonder if the editor flaked out in a few places. Or the computer seized control. Try to write whom in your computer with some of these new applications and it will slap you down and insist it is who. Talk about survival will we humans manage to hang onto any control when the computers continue to run our lives?? (Just my question.) But get Jackel Island, read it, think about your own boundaries.
When I meet someone who has written a book, I tend to be quite critical of the writing and am afraid to tell him/her what I think of it. However, reading Amy's book left me totally surprised because I had almost no criticism of it. I would be proud to have written "Jackel Island". I literally did not want to put it down. The location with its east and west side communities on a jungle island reminded me of the TV series, "Lost," and yet it was not an imitation of it. The premise was closer to the novel, "Lord of The Flies"; however, again, it was not an imitation of it. Sometimes I felt like sitting down with Jamie to tell her to grow up, but I can imagine some 22 year-olds being as impulsive as she was. I loved Kane. I could recognize the two sides of Dr. Bronte and could see how they could cause confusion for the people who knew him. Also, I really appreciated that the book ended and didn't leave me hanging until I read the next book.
